French-door refrigerators are a perfect blend of design and function. They feature stylish double doors that show a large fridge on top and a freezer drawer beneath. These refrigerators stand out due to their distinctive features, such as through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.

We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. They considered storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like its name implies, GE’s Profile series is targeted at people who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchens. This fridge has them all including a Keurig K cup coffee maker on the door to a sophisticated dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator is an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

Aside from that blip the fridge is a great option. It has a huge freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds plenty of frozen food compared to other models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is on par for an French door fridge costing this much. It has a decent sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in both compartments to create a customized storage layout for whatever you have to store. The GE PYE22PYNFS's interior design is stylish, too. The LED lighting is a nice touch and the inside storage bins come with the third shelf, which folds up beneath itself to allow you to store tall items. The drawers have temperature controls so you can set them to Beverage, Meat, or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to shut and open however I found the plastic's textured coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator in this price range. It has Wi-Fi as well as app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and offers a ton of customization options. It also sends you notifications when the door is left unlocked and when the fridge or freezer needs to be defrosted, and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be great if GE PYE22PYNFS could offer Precise Fill the option that is that is available in a few GE refrigerators that allow users to select how many cups they want to pour out. It does offer a countdown on the fridge's display to display how much water have remaining, but that's not as useful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is an impressive product. It's designed to look like it's a seamless component of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that helps keep vegetables and fruits fresher for longer and has dual compressors for maximum preservation of food. The Ice maker is among the top we've tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice with a low use of water. This fridge is ideal for a small household or a kitchenette that wants an elegant design and top of the best food preservation.

The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators Test for various reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained constant at just above 0° Fahrenheit and never changed more than a fraction - this is crucial to avoid freezer burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, achieving the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and keeping that temperature steady throughout the course of our testing.

Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app lets you monitor and control the refrigerator remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is a bit expensive, but it comes with excellent features and functionality for the cost.

french door style fridge freezer  is important to know the limitations of your fridge. You might need to be creative with tall objects because the fridge is limited in shelf space. The shelves are not impervious to spills and could easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. The trays are easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who require a lot of space in the space of a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge has the standard French door design, with two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded in order to create more space for tall items. There's also a full-width drawer to store products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.

One of the great features of this refrigerator is that its ice maker is inside the freezer, making it easy to move frozen ice to the fridge to be used when it is needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, for instance, sliding drawers to help you better organize the placement of your items. It also has a huge bin that holds plenty of frozen food items and a separate container for storing ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone. It's a good way to control and monitor your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't improve the efficiency of the fridge. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill food in this refrigerator as compared to other fridges we test. This could be due to the greater capacity.

The other issue we have with the door of this refrigerator. They have sunken handles at the front, which allows smaller people to pull them open from the bottom, but they're still difficult for taller people to steer shut without slamming them. It would have been much better if they had front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good choice for those who want to combine the advantages of a fridge with a French door with a more efficient layout. Its capacity is superior for a counter-depth model, and it cools well and has a nice layout. It's also a bit cheaper than the most expensive counter depth refrigerator with an icemaker, which makes it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good option for those looking for a French-door refrigerator that doesn't cost a lot of budget. It's a basic fridge that may not be as eye-catching as its rivals however, it does have enough features to make it a good option. Its most important characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer, which helps keep foods like veggies and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a large water and ice maker dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is situated over the two crisper bins, is a great feature. This drawer allows you to redirect the majority of the fridge's cooling power into this area so that you can keep food items which need extra attention. You can alter this feature by using a slider that's located right outside of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling setting for the entire fridge, however, I've found that changing the general settings tends have a better effect than specific ones.

In my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the fridge didn't differ much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance but does not quite make it to the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also connect this fridge to an intelligent thermometer to get more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge resistant" finish. It does a great job of removing streaks and fingerprints even when compared with glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
